Category: Drawing Things Together

Writing, 2009

It seems like I can’t stop myself from combining the different theoretical perspectives each week.  A question to ask, though, is whether this combination actually makes sense?  Or does it leave out something key?

[Update]

This representation was originally created for p544. However, in preparing for p574 and thinking about some useful dtg images, I’ve decided to add several tags to this representation so that it fits with both classes.

Yes! A major key was left out...one another! We may be influenced by reading, radio, television, internet info and/communication but we're social beings and are highly influenced off of the screen as well by our surroundings: peers, family, clubs, and yes, even that school interaction with the principal.
  • Absolutely! I had actually intended that the blue circle connect the people as well, but I guess it needed to be more clear! Great point.
  • I worry about the (over)use of the computer metaphor--not in this drawing but in the piece the drawing references. Remember that the computer was 'our' best attempt at approximating the way we thought cognition happened, and then now we use the product of that metaphor as a metaphor for how we think. It's all a big crazy circle.
  • I agree that we should be careful about the overuse of the metaphor, and I'm a huge fan of Hutchins' (1995) critique of how the metaphor isn't always used as intended. Is there a particular issue related to writing that you had in mind, or just in general given all of our readings on cognitive / information processing theories of learning?
